How category-based selection works
Express Entry ranks candidates with the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). General draws invite the top scores. Category-based draws invite the top scores within a chosen category, so a candidate who qualifies for a category can sometimes be invited below the general cut-off. You do not apply to a category separately, you become eligible by meeting the category's criteria (usually a qualifying occupation and enough eligible work experience) and by being in the Express Entry pool.
The 2026 categories
New for 2026:
- Physicians with Canadian work experience
- Researchers with Canadian work experience
- Senior managers, across four industry groupings (construction, transportation and production/utilities; trade, broadcasting and services; health, education and social services; and financial, communications and business services)
- Transport occupations
- Skilled military recruits (recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces)
Renewed for 2026 (carried over from the prior year):
- French-language proficiency
- Healthcare and social services occupations
- Education occupations
- Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) occupations
- Trade occupations

The change that affects your timeline: experience went up
The most important practical change for 2026 is the experience bar. For the renewed categories, the minimum is now one year of work experience within the last three years, up from six months. The physicians, researchers and senior managers categories require at least 12 months of work experience in Canada. The transport category accepts experience gained in Canada or abroad.
Why this matters: if you were counting on qualifying for a category draw after six months in your occupation, that plan no longer works for the renewed categories. Someone who starts a qualifying job now may need a full year before they are category-eligible. It does not change your CRS score, it changes when you become eligible for the targeted draw, and that timing can decide whether you get an invitation this year or next.

- If you are a physician, researcher, senior manager, in transport, or a skilled military recruit: 2026 opened a door that was not there before. Note that physicians, researchers and senior managers need their experience in Canada.
- If you were relying on the agriculture and agri-food category: it is gone for 2026. You will need a general draw, another category, or a provincial route.
- If you are in a renewed category (French, healthcare, education, STEM, trades): confirm you now meet the one-year experience minimum, not the old six-month bar.
- Everyone: category eligibility is about your occupation code and documented experience. Getting the occupation classification and the experience record right is what makes or breaks it.

- "Being in a category guarantees an invitation." No. Category draws still invite by CRS score within the category. It improves your odds, it is not automatic.
- "I apply to the category." No. You meet the criteria and stay in the pool; IRCC selects from eligible candidates.
