Canada Study Permit: The Essential Document Checklist

Reviewing study documents

Organizing your study permit application early helps you avoid delays and requests for additional documents. Use this checklist to prepare the core pieces before you apply.

Personal documents

  • A passport valid for the full length of your program.
  • Your letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • Academic transcripts and diplomas.

Proof of finances

  • Enough funds for tuition plus living costs (the amount varies by province and situation).
  • Bank statements, a GIC, or documented family financial sponsorship.

Important

Complete medical exams and biometrics when requested, and keep certified translations where needed.

Statement of purpose

Explain your academic and career goals and why the program you chose makes sense given your background.

Common mistakes

  • A mismatch between your study plan, program, and career path.
  • Insufficient or poorly organized proof of finances.
  • Leaving document submission to the last minute.
