Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
Verify your foreign education credentials for Express Entry
What is an ECA?
An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is a crucial step for skilled workers seeking to immigrate to Canada through the Express Entry system. It is an official document that verifies the validity and equivalency of your foreign education to Canadian education standards.
Why is an ECA Important?
An ECA provides three main benefits:
- Confirms equivalency: Verifies that your foreign education is equivalent to a Canadian credential
- Contributes to CRS score: Your education level significantly impacts your Comprehensive Ranking System score
- Mandatory requirement: Required for Federal Skilled Worker Program applicants and strongly recommended for other Express Entry programs
Types of ECAs
For Immigration Purposes
If you're applying through Express Entry or other immigration programs, you need an ECA specifically for immigration purposes from a designated organization approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
For Employment Purposes
Some regulated professions in Canada (such as doctors, engineers, teachers) require separate credential recognition from their regulatory body. This is different from the ECA for immigration.
How to Get an ECA
Follow these four steps:
1. Choose a Designated Organization
Select one of the five organizations designated by IRCC:
- WES (World Education Services) - Most popular choice
- ICAS (International Credential Assessment Service of Canada)
- CES (Comparative Education Service) - University of Toronto
- IQAS (International Qualifications Assessment Service) - Alberta
- ICES (International Credential Evaluation Service)
2. Submit Educational Documents
Gather and submit required documents including:
- Official transcripts from your educational institution
- Degree or diploma certificates
- Translation of documents (if not in English or French)
- Application forms and fees
3. Await Assessment Completion
Processing times vary by organization (typically 3-8 weeks). Some organizations offer expedited processing for an additional fee.
4. Receive the ECA Report
Your ECA report will indicate the Canadian equivalency of your credential (e.g., Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, etc.).
How an ECA Affects Your CRS Score
Your ECA directly impacts your Express Entry score by:
- Validating your education: Allows you to claim points for your education level
- Skill transferability: Enhances points when combined with work experience and language skills
- Higher credentials = more points: A Master's or PhD equivalency earns significantly more points than a Bachelor's degree
FAQs About ECAs
Do I need an ECA for all my degrees?
No. You only need an ECA for your highest level of completed education. However, if you have a Canadian degree, you don't need an ECA for that credential.
How long is an ECA valid?
ECAs are valid for five years from the issue date.
Can I use my ECA for both immigration and employment?
An ECA for immigration purposes may not be accepted by professional regulatory bodies. If you need to work in a regulated profession, check with the specific regulatory body for their requirements.
