Express Entry - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Common questions about Express Entry and the application process
What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is an online system used by the Canadian government to manage applications for permanent residence from skilled workers. It's not an immigration program itself, but rather a system for managing applications for three federal economic immigration programs.
Eligibility and Programs
Who is eligible for Express Entry?
Applicants must qualify under one of three federal programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Each program has its own eligibility requirements based on work experience, language skills, education, and other factors.
Do I need a job offer to apply?
Job offers are optional but substantially increase your CRS score. You can be invited to apply without a job offer if your CRS score is competitive.
The CRS and Scoring
What is the CRS?
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system that evaluates candidates on age, education, work experience, and language proficiency. Candidates are ranked against each other, and the highest-ranked individuals receive invitations to apply for permanent residence.
What is a good CRS score?
Minimum scores vary per draw cycle. Scores typically range from 400 to 500 points, but this changes based on the type of draw and the number of candidates in the pool.
How can I improve my CRS score?
You can improve your score by:
- Improving your language test results
- Gaining additional work experience
- Obtaining a job offer from a Canadian employer
- Receiving a provincial nomination (adds 600 points)
- Completing additional education
- Having your spouse improve their language scores or education
Draws and Invitations
How often are Express Entry draws held?
Express Entry draws are typically held every two weeks. However, the frequency can vary depending on immigration targets and government priorities.
What is a provincial nomination?
A provincial nomination is an endorsement from a Canadian province or territory that significantly boosts a candidate's CRS score by adding 600 points. This virtually guarantees an invitation to apply in the next draw.
Language Requirements
What language tests are accepted?
Approved tests include:
- English: IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core
- French: TEF Canada, TCF Canada
Candidates must achieve minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scores depending on which program they're applying through.
Timeline and Processing
How long does the Express Entry process take?
The entire process, from profile submission to receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and processing the application, typically takes about six months after receiving an ITA. The time to receive an ITA varies based on your CRS score and draw frequency.
Family and Dependents
Can I include my family in my application?
Yes. Applicants may include spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children in their Express Entry application. Including a spouse or partner can also help improve your CRS score if they have education, work experience, or strong language skills.
