Frequently asked questions
How do I reach CLB 7 after missing my target?
CLB 7 is roughly IELTS 6.0 in each ability, or the CELPIP, TEF, or TCF equivalent. There is no limit on retakes and only your best valid result counts, so most people close a small gap by drilling the weakest ability and re-sitting. Your result must still be valid the day you submit.
How long does Express Entry take to process?
IRCC's standard is generally around six months after an Invitation to Apply, but the real number moves with your program and file. Always check the official IRCC processing times tool for today's estimate before relying on a date.
What English test score do I need to apply?
It depends on the program. Federal Skilled Worker needs CLB 7 in all four abilities; Federal Skilled Trades needs CLB 5 speaking and listening and CLB 4 reading and writing; Canadian Experience Class needs CLB 7 or CLB 5 depending on your job's TEER. Higher scores also earn more CRS points.
Which work experience counts as skilled (TEER 0, 1, 2, 3)?
Paid, full time work (or the part time equivalent) in a TEER 0 to 3 occupation under NOC 2021. TEER 4 and 5 do not count. What matters is the duties you actually did matching the NOC, not the job title. Unpaid or volunteer work does not count.
Does an apprenticeship count as work experience for PR?
Paid apprenticeship hours in a skilled trade (TEER 2 or 3) can count, as long as the work was paid and the duties match the NOC. The in school portion generally does not count; only the paid on the job work does. Keep pay stubs and a duties reference letter.
My TRV (visitor visa) was refused. What now?
A refusal is not final. You can reapply anytime, but only if you address the exact reason, because reapplying with the same file usually gets the same result. Request the GCMS notes to see the officer's real concern, then submit a stronger application that answers it directly.
How long does it take to renew a PR card?
PR card renewal times change often and are published by IRCC, so check the official processing times tool. Apply well before expiry. An expired PR card does not mean you lost status; it only affects travelling back to Canada.
How long does it take to get a visitor record?
A visitor record extends your authorized stay inside Canada and has its own IRCC processing time that changes over time. If you apply online before your current status expires, you generally keep maintained (implied) status while you wait.
How long does it take to sponsor parents to Canada?
Parent and grandparent sponsorship (PGP) timelines are long and vary, so check IRCC's current times. Access each year depends on IRCC's invitation based intake, so being invited is the first step. The Super Visa is often faster for parents who want to visit for long periods.
Do I need an ECA for my foreign credentials?
For Express Entry, education done outside Canada generally needs an ECA from a designated organization (WES, IQAS, ICES, CES) to earn CRS points. A Canadian credential does not need one. The ECA confirms your foreign degree equals a Canadian one.
